How to Use Nuffield’s Archives

The Library houses an impressive collection of unpublished papers, many relating to individuals or projects associated with Nuffield College.

The archives include the personal papers of Lord Nuffield (William Morris), G.D.H. Cole and Margaret Cole, and material relating to the Nuffield College Social Reconstruction Survey. Among the other unpublished papers held by the Library are the personal papers of Lord Cherwell (Frederick Lindemann) and a large number of the papers of William Cobbett.

For a full list of these collections, please click here. PDF handlists are available for many collections. For the Cherwell handlist, however, you should visit the National Archives site. After choosing your search terms, select “Oxford University – Nuffield College Library” as the repository.

Bona fide researchers are welcome to consult archive materials. Prospective archive readers should apply in writing to the Archives Assistant by post (Nuffield College Library, Oxford, OX1 1NF) or email.

For more details on the archives, please visit our page on the Library website.
